Riyadh weather is classified as arid and it’s notable for its extreme heat during the long summer season. As the capital city of Saudi Arabia is located in the central highlands of the Nejd, Riyadh weather is the apotheosis of the worst the country has to offer. During summer temperatures reach uncomfortable proportions, frequently exceeding a scorching 50°C, occasionally dropping bellow freezing point during winter.

Translated from the Arabic, Riyadh means “the gardens”, a name derived from the many parks found around the city and its surroundings. However, rainfall is very sparse. The little precipitation the city experiences usually occurs between November and May, and is occasionally followed by thunderstorms, making the evenings somewhat cooler. Wet weather in Riyadh adds up to a total average rainfall of 106.50mm (4.19in) per annum. On the up side, since the city is located at a great distance from major bodies of water, Riyadh weather is also renewed for its low levels of humidity throughout the year.

Another distinct feature of weather in Riyadh is the frequent appearance of dust storms that more often than not reduce visibility to a meager 19 meters.
